The key ideas in Tiny Habits

A swarm of behaviours

Fogg takes one aspiration, say sleeping better, and has you list every specific behaviour that might help. Leave the phone in the kitchen. Read a novel in bed. Stop coffee after noon. He calls this a swarm of behaviours, and it turns a hope into a menu.

Golden behaviours

From the swarm, Fogg picks golden behaviours. Each one helps with the aspiration, is something you want to do, and is something you can do. He sorts the options on a Focus Map, by impact and by how likely you are to do them. The winners sit high on both.

What's making it hard?

When a behaviour isn't happening, Fogg asks what is making it hard to do. He lists five things that can get in the way: time, money, physical effort, mental effort and how well it fits your routine. Whichever is weakest holds the rest back, so fix that one first.

Tiny habits grow

Fogg finds that a tiny habit, done daily, tends to grow and multiply. Two press-ups turn into ten on the days you feel like it. Each small win also changes how you see yourself, as someone who follows through, and that makes the next habit easier to start.

Lines worth underlining

  1. When we act

Fogg says you act when motivation, the ability to do it and a prompt all meet at the same moment.

  2. Motivation

Motivation comes and goes, so don't build a habit that needs lots of it.

  3. Go tiny

Make the new habit tiny, like flossing one tooth, so it's easy to do on any day.

  4. Anchor

Tie it to a routine you already have, like brushing your teeth, and let that be the reminder.

  5. Celebrate

Right after you do it, celebrate with a small cheer or a smile. That good feeling wires it in.

A story from the book

Two press-ups after the loo

Fogg's own recipe for getting stronger was almost silly. After he used the loo, he did two press-ups. It was too small to skip, even on a bad day, and on good days he did more. The habit grew until press-ups were simply part of his day.

Hot take · true or myth?

If a habit keeps failing, you just need more willpower.

See the book's answer

Myth. Fogg treats a habit that keeps failing as a badly designed one. Make it smaller, or tie it to a better moment in your day.

One thing to try

Swarm one wish tonight

Pick one aspiration, like being calmer at work. Write ten specific behaviours that might help, however small. Circle one you'd like to do and could do tomorrow. Shrink it until it takes under thirty seconds, then decide which daily moment it will follow.
