High Performance Habits

by Brendon Burchard

Why do some people keep winning?

Lots of people succeed once. Brendon Burchard wanted to know why some keep succeeding for years without burning out. His answer is six habits, drawn from his own institute's surveys and coaching work, so read them as a coach's findings more than settled science.

The key ideas in High Performance Habits

Six habits, two kinds

Three habits are personal: seek clarity, generate energy and raise necessity. Three are social: increase productivity, develop influence and demonstrate courage. Burchard's claim is that anyone can learn them, whatever their personality or job.

Clarity is something you do

High performers keep asking who they want to be, how they want to treat people and what they want to feel. Burchard treats clarity as a practice. You ask again before each week, meeting or project, instead of waiting for a sense of purpose to arrive.

Release tension, set intention

Then decide how you want to show up for whatever comes next. Burchard suggests doing it every time you switch tasks.

Make it a must

Burchard's word for it is necessity, the point where doing well stops being a nice idea and becomes something you have to do. High performers tie their work to who they are and to the people counting on them.

Prolific Quality Output

Every field has a kind of output that counts most, like the chapters an author writes or the products a company ships. Burchard calls it PQO. High performers spend more of their week producing it and less on busywork.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Clarity

Before each day, meeting or task, decide who you want to be and how you want it to go.

  2. Energy

Take a short pause between tasks to let go of tension and set an aim for what comes next.

  3. Necessity

High performers feel they must do well, because the people behind the work matter to them.

  4. Productivity

Spend your hours on the few things that really count in your field, and get very good at them.

  5. Influence

Help people think bigger and challenge them to grow, and they start to follow your lead.

One thing to try

Try a one-minute reset

Before your next meeting or call, shut your eyes for sixty seconds. Then ask yourself how you want to come across in the next hour, and go in with that.
