The key ideas in The Total Money Makeover

Debt is not a tool

The belief Ramsey attacks hardest is that debt helps you build wealth. He argues that wealthy people mostly got there by avoiding it, and that borrowing makes the lender rich. His plan treats every debt except the mortgage as an emergency, to be cleared as fast as possible.

The seven Baby Steps

In order. Save $1,000 for emergencies. Pay off all debt except the house. Save three to six months of expenses. Invest 15 per cent of income for retirement. Save for your children's university. Pay off the house early. Then build wealth and give.

The debt snowball

List your debts, apart from the house, smallest to largest. Pay the minimum on each and throw every spare penny at the smallest. When it's gone, add its payment to the next. Ramsey admits the highest rate first is cheaper on paper, but says quick wins keep people going.

Live like no one else

Ramsey's motto for the plan. Accept a few years of living on less than your friends, with no car payments, no holidays on credit and no meals out you can't afford. Later, he says, you'll be able to live and give in ways they can't.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Start with you

Your money problems come mostly from your own habits, so the fix starts with you.

  2. Starter fund

First save $1,000 fast, so a small surprise bill doesn't push you back onto a credit card.

  3. Debt snowball

Pay off your debts from smallest to largest. Quick wins keep you going better than clever maths.

  4. Gazelle intensity

Chase your debt down like a gazelle running from a cheetah, with total focus until it's gone.

  5. Emergency fund

Once the debts are cleared, save three to six months of living costs for real emergencies.

A story from the book

Ramsey went broke first

In his twenties, Ramsey built up a large property business, much of it on short-term bank loans. When the loans were called in, he couldn't pay. He lost nearly everything and went bankrupt. He then set out to learn how money really works, and this plan grew from that.

Hot take · true or myth?

Selling your things and taking extra work is worth it to clear debt fast.

See the book's answer

True. Ramsey urges people to sell what they can, pick up extra work and cut spending hard until the debt is gone. He calls it running with gazelle intensity.
