The 40% Rule
Goggins says that when your mind tells you you're finished, you're only about 40% done. Feeling spent is a warning light your brain switches on early, to protect you. Most of what you have is still there.
Motivation
by David Goggins
How much is left in the tank?
David Goggins grew up with a violent father, then poverty and racism in small-town Indiana. He went on to become a Navy SEAL and an ultramarathon runner. Can't Hurt Me asks how much of what we call our limit is really our mind asking us to stop.

Goggins stuck notes on his bathroom mirror with blunt truths about himself and the goals he'd set. Every day he read them to his own face. The point is to stop lying to yourself about where you are, even when it's hard to hear.
Hands grow calluses from repeated friction. Goggins believes the mind works the same way. Do the hard thing you'd rather avoid, again and again, and it stops feeling like an emergency. You get used to discomfort by choosing it.
When a run or a bad week starts to break you, reach into your memory for things you've already come through. Goggins calls this his Cookie Jar. Each old win is evidence you can take more than you think.
His story
Goggins went from an overweight pest-control worker to a Navy SEAL by facing what scared him.
The mirror
Stick honest notes about your faults on the mirror and work through them one by one.
A tough mind
Doing hard things on purpose toughens your mind, the way rough work toughens your hands.
Cookie jar
When you want to quit, remember the hard things you've already got through and use them as fuel.
The 40% rule
When your mind says you're finished, you've usually used only about 40% of what you've got.
A story from the book
In his twenties Goggins weighed nearly 300 pounds and sprayed restaurants for cockroaches on the night shift. After watching a documentary about Navy SEAL training, he lost more than 100 pounds in under three months to qualify for it.
