Grit

by Angela Duckworth

Why do some people keep going?

Angela Duckworth left a consulting job to teach maths, and noticed that some of her strongest students weren't the quickest learners. Grit is her search for what makes people achieve more than their talent predicts. Her answer is a mix of passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.

The key ideas in Grit

Effort counts twice

Duckworth offers two rough equations. Talent times effort gives you skill. Skill times effort gives you achievement. Talent is how quickly your skill grows when you work at it. Effort appears in both, so steady work can carry a less talented person past a more gifted one who stops.

The Grit Scale

Her Grit Scale is ten statements you rate for how much they sound like you. Half test perseverance, such as finishing whatever you begin. The other half test passion, and they don't ask how intensely you feel. They ask whether your interests hold steady from year to year.

Where grit comes from

Duckworth names four things that grow grit from the inside. Interest, because you can't persist at something you don't enjoy. Practice, the daily push to beat yesterday. Purpose, the sense that the work matters to others. Hope, the belief that your effort can change what happens.

Stubborn at the top

Duckworth pictures goals as a hierarchy. Daily tasks sit at the bottom, bigger aims in the middle, and at the top one goal that gives the rest their point. Gritty people hold the top goal fixed and swap the lower ones freely when one turns out to be blocked.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Effort counts twice

Effort turns talent into skill, then turns skill into results. So effort counts twice.

  2. What grit is

Grit means caring about one long-term goal and sticking with it for years.

  3. Top-level goal

Keep one top goal, and let the smaller goals change as long as they still serve it.

  4. Practice

Good practice means working on your weak spots, with feedback, until they get easier.

  5. Hope

Gritty people expect effort to pay off, so a setback looks like a problem they can fix.

A story from the book

Beast Barracks

Before their first term, new cadets at West Point go through a brutal summer of training known as Beast Barracks, and some quit. The academy's Whole Candidate Score, built from grades, fitness and leadership potential, couldn't tell who would leave. A short grit questionnaire Duckworth gave the cadets could.

Hot take · true or myth?

Gritty people never give up on a goal once they've set it.

See the book's answer

Myth. They drop lower-level goals all the time when those are blocked, Duckworth says. What they hold on to is the top-level goal the smaller ones were serving.

One thing to try

Pick your hard thing

In the Duckworth house there's a Hard Thing Rule. Everyone does one hard thing that needs daily practice, and nobody quits before a natural stopping point, such as the end of a season. Pick yours, write down when its stopping point is, and don't consider quitting until you get there.
