The Wright Brothers

by David McCullough

How did two bike makers fly first?

In 1903 America's best-funded flying machine, built by Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian with government money, crashed into the Potomac. Nine days later two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, with no college degrees and no backers, flew. David McCullough tells how they did it.

The key ideas in The Wright Brothers

A house full of books

Their father, Milton, a bishop, filled the house with books and encouraged the children to read widely. Their mother, Susan, could make almost anything with her hands. In 1878 Milton brought home a toy helicopter of cork, bamboo and paper, driven by a rubber band. The boys never forgot it.

Balance before power

Many would-be aviators concentrated on engines. Wilbur thought the real problem was balance and steering, as on a bicycle. Watching birds twist their wingtips to stay level, he worked out a way to twist a glider's wings with a set of cables. It was called wing warping.

Trust your own numbers

Their 1901 glider lifted far less than the published tables promised. Back in Dayton they built a wind tunnel, a wooden box about six feet long with a fan at one end, and tested dozens of small metal wings. The old figures were wrong, so they made their own.

Ignored at home, cheered in France

For years few people believed them. In 1904 and 1905 they flew circles over Huffman Prairie, a cow pasture outside Dayton, and the local papers barely noticed. Then in August 1908 Wilbur flew near Le Mans in France, banking and turning with ease, and the French aviators watching were stunned.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Dayton

Two bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, with no college degrees, taught themselves to fly.

  2. Watching birds

Wilbur watched how birds tilt their wings to balance, and copied it with wing warping.

  3. Kitty Hawk

The Wrights tested at Kitty Hawk because its steady winds and soft sand suited their gliders.

  4. Own numbers

When the published data proved wrong, they built their own wind tunnel and started again.

  5. Twelve seconds

On 17 December 1903 Orville flew for twelve seconds, the first powered flight with a pilot in control.

A story from the book

Twelve seconds at Kill Devil Hills

On 17 December 1903, in a bitter wind on the North Carolina coast, Orville lay on the lower wing as the Flyer lifted off its rail. It flew 120 feet in 12 seconds. John Daniels, from the lifesaving station, took the photograph. By noon Wilbur had stayed up 59 seconds.

Hot take · true or myth?

The Wright brothers were university-trained engineers.

See the book's answer

Myth. Neither even got a high school diploma. They taught themselves from books, and ran a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, that paid for their experiments.

One thing to try

Test it small first

Before your next big decision, like buying a bike or changing a recipe, run a cheap test. Borrow one for a day, or cook half a batch. The Wrights flew a kite and three gliders before they ever added an engine.
