I Will Teach You to Be Rich

by Ramit Sethi

Why don't we do what we know?

Most people know they ought to save and invest, and still don't. Ramit Sethi blames confusing advice and the guilt that comes with it. His six-week programme sets up a money system that mostly runs itself, so you can spend freely on the things you care about.

Big Wins beat lattes

Sethi has little patience for advice about skipping your daily coffee. A handful of choices matter far more, such as automating your savings, investing early, choosing low-cost funds and negotiating your pay. He calls these the Big Wins. Get them right and the coffee barely matters.

The Conscious Spending Plan

Sethi splits take-home pay four ways: fixed costs (50 to 60%), investments (10%), savings goals (5 to 10%) and guilt-free spending (20 to 35%). The last bucket is the point. He wants you to spend extravagantly on what you love and cut costs mercilessly on what you don't.

Which money goes where first

Sethi calls it a ladder. First, pay into your 401(k), an American workplace pension, enough to get the employer's full match. Next, clear credit card debt. Then fill a Roth IRA, a retirement account you open yourself and later draw from tax-free. Only then pay more into the 401(k).

Money that moves itself

Sethi's Automatic Money Flow sends your pay where it should go without you touching it. On payday, set amounts leave for investments and savings, and bills are paid on time. Once it runs, you no longer depend on willpower or memory to do the right thing.

The 85% Solution

Getting started matters more than becoming an expert, Sethi argues. People lose more by waiting for the perfect fund than by picking a decent one today. For most, he suggests a single cheap target-date fund, which shifts to safer holdings as retirement gets closer.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Credit cards

Use a credit card, but pay it off in full every month.

  2. Ask

Call your bank or card company and ask them to drop a fee. They often say yes.

  3. Spending plan

His Conscious Spending Plan splits your pay into fixed costs, investing, saving and guilt-free fun.

  4. Spend on joy

Pick the few things you love and spend well on them. Be stingy with everything else.

  5. Automate

Set your money to move by itself on payday, so good habits need no willpower.

One thing to try

Set one transfer for payday

Open your banking app today and set up a standing order for the day after payday, moving a fixed amount into savings. Start small if you need to. In Sethi's system, the habit of automatic saving comes first, and you can raise the amount later.
