Everything Is F'cked

by Mark Manson

Why so hopeless when life's good?

By most measures people today are safer and richer than ever, yet many feel that everything is going wrong. Mark Manson's Everything Is F'cked, subtitled A Book About Hope, asks where hope comes from and why it breaks so easily.

The key ideas in Everything Is F'cked

The Consciousness Car

Manson splits the mind into a Thinking Brain and a Feeling Brain, and puts them in a car. The Feeling Brain drives. The Thinking Brain sits in the passenger seat, sure it's in charge. It only gets its way by persuading the driver, in the language of feeling.

Newton's Laws of Emotion

Manson borrows from Isaac Newton. His first law of emotion is that for every action there is an equal and opposite emotional reaction. When someone wrongs us, we feel owed, and we want the score evened up.

What hope needs

Manson says hope rests on three things: a sense of control over your own life, something you value enough to pursue, and people who share it with you. Take one away and people slide towards nihilism, the sense that nothing is worth doing.

Blue dots and purple dots

Manson cites a study in which people picked blue dots out of a series. As blue dots grew rare, people started calling purple ones blue. We do the same with problems, he argues. As life improves, the bar for a crisis drops, so the worry never runs out.

Lines worth underlining

  1. Feelings

Your feelings are driving the car. Your thinking brain mostly just reads the map.

  2. Hope

To keep hoping, you need a sense of control, something you value and people who share it.

  3. Blue dot effect

The fewer real problems we have, the more we treat small ones as disasters.

  4. Pain

Trying to avoid all pain makes you weaker. Small doses of it are how you grow.

  5. Treat people

Treat people as ends in themselves, never only as tools to get what you want.

A story from the book

The man who broke into Auschwitz

Manson opens with Witold Pilecki, a Polish officer who let himself be arrested so he could get inside Auschwitz and report on it. He built a resistance network in the camp, escaped, and was later executed by Poland's communist government. Manson uses him to ask what keeps people going.

Hot take · true or myth?

By most measures, life today is better than at any point in history.

See the book's answer

True. Manson accepts that people are healthier, safer and richer than ever before. His puzzle is why so many of them feel hopeless anyway.

One thing to try

Ask for nothing

Manson leans on Kant's rule to treat people as ends in themselves, never merely as means. Think of someone you only contact when you want something, a colleague or an old friend. Get in touch this week with nothing to ask for, and notice how it feels.
