Digital Minimalism

by Cal Newport

Why can't we put the phone down?

Cal Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown, kept hearing from readers who felt their phones were running their lives. He argues that apps are built to capture attention, so tips and willpower fail. You need an idea of what technology is for, and the nerve to act on it.

The key ideas in Digital Minimalism

Digital minimalism

Newport defines it as putting your online time into a few carefully chosen activities that strongly support things you value, and happily missing out on everything else. Plenty of apps offer some small benefit. He asks whether each one is the best way to serve something you care about.

The thirty-day declutter

Newport's method is a clean break. For thirty days, step away from optional technologies, keeping only what work or family truly need. Use the time to rediscover what you enjoy offline. Then bring things back one at a time, only if each serves something you deeply value.

Solitude deprivation

Newport uses a definition of solitude as time when your mind is free from input from other minds. A podcast on a walk doesn't count. A quiet bench in a busy park can. With phones filling every spare moment, he warns that many of us almost never get any.

Don't click like

Likes and quick comments feel like keeping in touch, but Newport argues they carry almost nothing. He suggests giving them up and spending the effort on real conversation instead, like a call, a visit or set times when friends know they can ring you.

Lines worth underlining

  1. The idea

Use only a few tech tools on purpose, the ones that clearly help what you care about.

  2. The Amish

The Amish ask whether a new tool helps what they value before letting it in.

  3. Slot machines

Many apps are built to keep you hooked, the way a slot machine is.

  4. The declutter

Take 30 days away from optional tech, then bring back only what earns its place.

  5. Solitude

You need time alone with your own thoughts, and a phone in your pocket quietly takes it away.

A story from the book

Lincoln's cottage

During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln spent long stretches living in a cottage at the Soldiers' Home, a few miles outside Washington. Newport tells the story to show what solitude gave Lincoln, a quiet place away from the White House crowds to think through the war's hardest decisions.

Hot take · true or myth?

A podcast on a solo walk counts as time alone with your thoughts.

See the book's answer

Myth. Newport defines solitude as time when your mind is free from input from other minds. A voice in your ears is input, even on an empty hillside.

One thing to try

Walk without it

This week, take a thirty-minute walk and leave your phone at home. No podcast and no music. Newport recommends long walks as one of the simplest ways to get solitude back. Notice what your mind gets round to when nothing is feeding it.
